One Dead, Several Others Injured In Rivers Communal Clash

At least one person have been reportedly  killed following a communal clash between Luawii and Kapnor communities in Khana Local Government Area of Rivers State.

The two communities have been in dispute over a piece of land where a secondary school popularly known as Government Secondary School Luawii is built with each claiming ownership of the land.

It was learnt that trouble began when a boy from Luawii community was shot by unknown gunmen on Tuesday morning allegedly attacked by members of the neighbouring community Kapnor who later died in the hospital on Wednesday.

A house belonging to one Pelle of Kapnor was set ablaze during a reprisal on Wednesday by the Luawii youths.

Some Kapnor youths, who were angered by the incident, were said to have later stormed Luawii community, setting houses ablaze and attacking residents randomly.

The youth leader of Luawii community Meelubari fred was reported to have been shot five times this morning but has regained consciousness and is currently receiving treatment in an undisclosed location.

Several persons were said to have sustained varying degrees of injury while many others, who managed to escape, sought refuge in a makeshift camp around other neighbouring communities.

Efforts to reach leaders from the affected communities were not successful.

But a source in the area said, “As I am talking to you now, there is nobody in Luawii community. It is unbelievable. The youths have completely sacked the community and residents are now camped elsewhere.”
