RSG UNCOVERS PLOT BY APC AND POLICE TO KILL PROTESTING STUDENTS BY EMMA OKAH: A POOR OUTING OF A NEWLY APPOINTED COMMISSIONER OF INFORMATION.

My attention was drawn to a Press Release made by the newly appointed Commissioner for Information to the
Rivers State Government, Barr. Emma Okah, wherein he alleged to have uncovered plots by APC and the Nigerian Police to kill Rivers State students who have proposed to protest against the Rivers State Government over its neglect to their plights.

Although, I wasn't surprised that such gutter release would be made by him being that it has become the pattern of the Rivers State Governor to make unguided and unsubstantiated statements notwithstanding his exalted office. I therefore had no doubt that his Commissioner or any person loyal to him would also stoop so low.

While, I shall not step into the shoes of Rivers APC Publicity Secretary or the Rivers Police PPRO. It is important to remind Barr. Emma Okah that his Press Statement falls short of any logical reasoning.

For the purpose of clarity, the Students union had on the 18th Sept 2017, issued a communique demanding the followings;
1. That the Rivers State Government should pay them bursary.
2. Give them back their National Secretariat that was provided for them by the immediate past government of Rt. Hon. Chibuike Rotimi Amaechi.
3. Provide buses for their activities.
4. Appoint a Special Assistant on Students Affairs, to enable the students have a liaison between them and government.
5. Release subventions for their activities and;
6. That the Rivers State House of Assembly should consider and pass a bill into law that deals with students welfare.

If the Rivers State Government was responsible enough, the right thing to do, would have been to call the Students to a meeting and find a way to addressing their requests within available resources or even make a commitment.
Unfortunately, that was not done.

Information available to me has it that a peaceful protest by the students that was scheduled to hold on Wednesday, 27th Sept 2017. Having perfected all security clearance from law enforcement authorities. On, Tuesday, 26th Sept 2017, the newly appointed Commissioner for Education called them to a meeting at his office to appeal that they put on hold the protest to save his office the embarrassment the protest will cost him, even to the extent of pursuing the students later to SPAR to continue the begging. As if that was not enough, the Chief Of Staff, Chief Emeka Woke also invited them to his official residence and continued the 'begging' to the extent of inviting Barr. Emma Okah to come and also 'beg' the students for his mischievous press release.

The question therefore begging for answer from the Press release issued by Emma Okah is;
1. What is politically motivated about a protest that adequate notice was issued?
2. What political point does the Rivers APC or the Nigerian Police intend to score by killing law abiding students?

It is therefore pertinent that as persons saddled with the responsibility of public office, we carry ourselves and make statements befitting of the office we occupy.

This particular Press Statement of Barr. Emma Okah is a shame, a hate speech, an attack on the Nigerian Police Force and our collective sensibilities as Nigerians and grossly offends the Nigerian law.

I therefore call on the Nigerian Police not to sweep this statement under the carpet as it has become one too many by the Rivers State Government and should be put to check.
